Abstract

Much of the global population suffers from headache disorders like migraine. Because there are so many triggers and unknown explanations for migraine, it can be hard to find effective treatments for it. There are some studies that point to inflammation as either a cause or result of headache disorders; therefore, it is natural that we should explore the possibility of inflammation reducing factors when considering treatment options. The factor being explored in this review is magnesium supplementation, which has been shown to reduce inflammation by decreasing the amount of calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP) in circulation. There is a clear link between migraine and inflammation, specifically neuroinflammation that is caused by alteration of mast cells. The levels of neuroinflammatory molecules like CGRP are shown to be elevated in those suffering from migraine, which is where the link between migraine and inflammation originates. It can be hard to say however, if inflammation is caused by migraine or if migraines cause inflammation. The link between inflammation and magnesium is also a cause for concern. Though magnesium deficiency has been reported in patients with inflammation, there are relatively few studies determining if the inflammation is caused by a magnesium deficiency or if it’s the other way around. Based on limited evidence, it can be concluded that magnesium supplementation could be used as a prevention or treatment option for those suffering from migraine or other headache disorders. More research is needed to further explore the potential for new treatments and preventions, like magnesium supplements, for headache disorders.
